Leader of 2050 carbon neutrality for entire phases of resources from operating mines to abandoned mines
- Carbon offsetting through introduction of eco-friendly equipment in mining fields
We engage in policies converting energy sources for mining equipment in order to reduce CO2 emission by switching diesel-powered equipment to electric/battery-powered equipment. Also, we endeavor to prevent forest destruction through the pit supports for the mines.
- Preemptive execution of carbon neutrality by means of “afforestation,” a forest carbon offsetting project
Beginning with the ‘forest carbon offsetting project,’ a private-collaborated carbon neutrality cluster project designed to store CO2 by securing carbon-absorbing sources through follow-up management of the site completed with forest restoration and utilizing the space at domestic mines, we aim to systematically expand to forest biomass projects to restore biological diversity by combining existing projects and social responsibilities.

Realization of eco-friendly management together with local communities
- Conversion of mining areas to the hub for renewable clean energy
The KOMIR engages in projects converting fossil fuel-based mining areas to renewable energy districts. It leads the conversion to eco-friendly mining areas based on support projects which are tailored for each region under the consideration of characteristics of Gyeongbuk Mungyeong, Gangneung Taebaek and Yeongdong areas.
- New green projects for unused spaces at mines to bring them back to residents
Effective mining areas are equipped with characteristics maintaining constant temperature and humidity. Stemming from these characteristics, added values can be generated in conjunction with the Sixth Industry, i.e. Smart Farm. The KOMIR conducts new green projects, including Taebaek Strawberry Smart Farm and Jeongseon wooden pallet production facility, in order to contribute to vitalization of local economy by improving the quality of life and creating new jobs for residents at abandoned mine areas.
- Contribution to resource recirculation economy by recycling water resource and wastes from water purification facilities at mines
Following 3-year long efforts, the KOMIR successfully commercialize the absorbent manufacturing technology for the first time ever in Korea by utilizing high-concentration iron content within sludge from mine effluent treatment facilities and subsequently reduces air pollutants, such as hydrogen sulfide and siloxane, by means of recycling technology.
In addition, the KOMIR supports the use of industrial water as it addresses wild fire by utilizing the effluent from water purification facilities and reducing dusts near construction sites in response to the current issues, including inadequate countermeasures against wild fire due to lack of water resource at remote mountain areas as well as insufficient industrial water.
Implementation of public-interactive environment management practiced by KOMIR

We practice environmental protection movement on a daily basis through activities of erasing carbon footprints, activities of reducing fine dust, energy conservation campaign and low-carbon management & donation projects.
- Realization of eco-friendliness and carbon neutrality together with mining industry
The KOMIR promotes carbon neutrality and resource recirculation by expanding financial aids and building eco-friendly infrastructure. We expanded the financial service for business funds to the recycling business venues, which used to be available only for domestic mining business operators, and also invests efforts to realize the public-interactive environment management by supporting the policies on eco-friendly vehicles through reservation of critical minerals required to manufacture electric vehicles.
- Development of public-participating ESG environment management systems
We carefully listen to the public voice through various communication channels, including the Public-Participating Innovation Group, ESG Public-Participating Budget Allocation Committee, Carbon Neutrality Committee and consulting groups by each promotion project for abandoned mining areas, and then improve and advance the operating system of KOMIR for environmental preservation.
